Teachers recognize Post cartoonist with Leadership Award National Post -- November 12, 2007

An Ontario teachers association has honoured Gary Clement, the editorial cartoonist for the National Post, for
his contribution to the study of history and social sciences.
"We teach kids the importance of political cartoons and how to interpret them. They're often much deeper than
they appear to be on the surface," said Lela Lilko, an executive member of the Ontario History and Social
Sciences Teachers Association.
"So we have real admiration for political cartoonists who can capture what seems to be the important social
issues or political issues of the time."
Mr. Clement received a leadership award on Saturday at the association's annual conference, along with fellow
honorees Roy McMurtry, former chief justice of Ontario, and Peter Seixas, a professor in the faculty of education
at the University of British Columbia.
The award recipients are chosen annually by the association's executive members.
Mr. Clement is also an author and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Great Poochini won the
1999 Governor-General's Literary Award for illustration. A previous book, Just Stay Put, was shortlisted for the
Governor-General's Award.
His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Toronto Life Fashion and other
publications.
