…a wealth of visual material on the prophet to be found all over the world.
Here we have a museum in Istanbul…
So, what’s the real problem here? Let’s look at several of the arguments
that have been made for suppressing these cartoons.
First, we are told that there is a prohibition on visually portraying the prophet in
any way, shape or form.
Okay, fine. But if you Googled both “Mohammed and paintings,
here’s what you would come up with…
…a tourist grotto in the Sinai…
…and a museum in Brooklyn…
…a church in Ethiopia…
…all displaying images of Mohammed for the public to see.
No one is demonstrating against these institutions. Well, not yet, anyway.
“Ah, but you might argue, “these are highly respectful images of
Mohammed,
leading to the second argument that says religions should never be mocked.
I didn’t know that thirty years ago when, as a failed Anglican, I drew this
cartoon of Christ on the cross with a pie in his face, asking the question…
…is nothing sacred?
Or here we have both Jesus and Santa down in the dumps, meeting in a bar at
Christmas time…
… both having maxed out their Visa cards.
More recently, this was drawn after another mindless, incomprehensible act in the
Middle East. It points out a headline we never see…
