Bruce MacKinnon, a native of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, studied the liberal arts for one year at St. Francis Xavier University. He then entered the Fine Arts program at Mount Allison University and finally transferred to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to study graphic design. His first professional experience in cartooning was at the age of 14, when he was hired to do a weekly cartoon for the Antigonish weekly “The Casket”. Later, while attending high school, he was hired to do cartoons for the Antigonish Spectator, and while attending St. F.X. U. he drew cartoons for the Xaverian Weekly.
He started doing a weekly editorial cartoon for the Halifax Chronicle-Herald and The Mail-Star in 1985, working at home while raising his newborn daughter. He joined the Herald full-time in August of 1986, filling the void left by renowned cartoonist Bob Chambers.
He lives in Halifax with his wife, Peggy, and their children, Robyn and Jamieson. -- He won the NNA in 1992 and 1993. |
