ANDY DONATO
Andy Donato was born in Scarborough in 1937. He graduated from Danforth Technical School in 1955 and began working at Eaton's as a layout artist.
He left Eaton's in 1959 to join a small art studio and, after a year, decided to freelance. He later joined the Toronto Telegram.
He won a National Newspaper Award in 1976 for editorial cartooning (he has been nominated twice since) and, in 1980, won Best Editorial Cartoon in the World from the Montreal Salon of Cartoons (a world-wide competition). Andy won the Metropolitan Toronto Police Annual News Award for Cartooning in 1993 & 97. He is a past president (1985) of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, and is President of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists for 2000-2001.
Since 1971, as well as being the editorial cartoonist for the Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation, he was the Art Director. In March, 1993, he was appointed Corporate Art Director, but took early retirement in 1996. He is still the main cartoonist for the Sun, but on a freelance basis. The Sun's head office is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Andy has had one-man exhibitions in Toronto, New York, Johannesburg and London, England, of his paintings from 1965 to 2003, and started printing his cartoons in political cartoon books from 1974 to 1993, all of which sold out. In 2004, Andy illustrated The Little Book of Canadian Political Wisdom, which was authored by Rick Broadhead.
